May we be as pure as cool water and always take the straight and narrow path.” How wonderful would it be if everyone lived with the heart of a devoted mother? “May flowers bloom from our precious family’s footprints and sweet scents radiate from their words. It has long been a tradition for mothers in Korea to pray for their families’ well-being, offering a bowl of fresh water as ritual food. They were recognized for their international market potential when nominated for the APaMM Official Showcase at the Ulsan World Music Festival and Journey to Korean Music, organized by the Korea Arts Management Service. By devoting their music to bringing goodness and comfort to people’s lives, Baraji aims to create a more humane world.īaraji’s unique repertoire has been featured at various music festivals across Korea since being awarded the 1st Prize at the 5th Myriad Wave Concert in 2012. Baraji also focuses on polishing and reconstructing elements of traditional Korean music, such as harmony, vocals, percussion, instrumentals, and playful improvisation, so that they resonate with modern audiences while still communicating deep emotion.

The sound of Baraji is drawn from Jindo Ssitgim Gut, creating a unique musical form by adapting the traditional musical frame for their contemporary performances. The spirit of baraji is epitomized in Jindo Ssitgim Gut, a traditional shamanistic ritual for the dead and a prayer for peaceful rest through singing and dancing. In Korean traditional music, baraji also refers to the impromptu singing by accompanists that adds harmony to lead vocals and enhances the color of the music. The ensemble’s name, Baraji, is a pure Korean word that refers to the heartfelt care given to a person through unconditional support.
